Information

Dr. Hempel is responsible for the day-to-day operations at TEL, grant development, and research management.
He originally hails from Saxony in Eastern Germany.
Dr. Hempel joined the TEL group in 1999 while pursuing his Bachelor's degree from the Deutsche Telekom University of Applied Sciences, in Leipzig, Germany, only to return for his Masters and Ph.D. His expertise in various programming languages - spanning from Logo, BASIC, and assembly to C/C++/C# - allowed him to contribute numerous tools and solutions to the research projects at TEL.

Research Interests

Dr. Hempel's primary research interests include wireless network protocol design and evaluation with an emphasis on Routing, MAC, and PHY layer aspects of wireless communication. He has conducted extensive research in performance evaluation for mobile applications, multimedia security, and resource optimization. His current efforts are focused on developing green energy solutions for wireless sensor networks (including energy harvesting and self-powered WSN), steganography detection and prevention, as well as research in covert channel analysis.
